The combat system - strategy is everything
Baldur’s Gate 3 relies on a turn-based combat system that is strongly modelled on the rules of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)is based on. Each character can perform one movement, one action and one bonus action per round, so every move needs to be well thought out.
Tactical thinking is the key to victory
Every decision affects the battle - from initiative, which determines who attacks first, to positioning and height advantage, which influence hit chances and damage.
Players have numerous opportunities to assert themselves in battle:
- Use attacks and spells wisely - Use your resources wisely to turn the tide.
- Use the environment creatively - pushing opponents into chasms, setting fire to explosive barrels or creating slippery surfaces can be crucial to the game.
- Pay attention to dice rolls - Your chances of scoring also depend on the luck of the dice, so plan your moves carefully.
Important fighting tips:
- Utilise height advantage - attacks from above have a higher chance of hitting.
- Start ambushes - Sneak up on enemies and start the fight with a critical hit.
- Pay attention to elemental interactions - fire ignites oil, water increases lightning damage and ice can cause enemies to slip.
- Take cover - Use walls or rocks to protect yourself from long-range attacks.
- Combine classes cleverly - A rogue can poison enemies, while a mage can finish them off with fire spells.

The right team
In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can travel with up to four characters, and a balanced party composition is crucial for success. Each role in the team has its strengths - a well-coordinated group can survive difficult battles and overcome a variety of challenges.

- Tank (frontline fighter) - Withstands damage and protects the group.
