Devolver Digital demands Rockstar Games out

Devolver Digital, the studio behind titles such as Enter the Gungeon, has also noticed the recent postponement of GTA 6 - and is reacting in its own unique way. Instead of bowing to the giant, they are taking their plans to the extreme with a wink.

Rockstar's postponement? Only an incentive for Devolver
For many developers, the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 is an unavoidable milestone - one that they prefer to avoid. But Devolver Digital sees things differently: they don't shy away from direct comparison with the industry giant, but face it with humour and courage. Their latest announcement is causing a stir in the gaming community.

David against Goliath

Some time ago, Devolver Digital announced that it would be releasing its as yet unannounced game in autumn 2025 - on the exact same day as GTA 6, a decision that surprised many: While other studios are timing their releases around Rockstar's mega-release, Devolver is going on the offensive. Even if they don't have the same market power, they are well established with innovative titles such as Cult of the Lamb, Enter the Gungeon and the insider tip Inscryption.

Release postponement as a steep template

When Rockstar recently announced that the launch of GTA 6 would be postponed to 26 May 2026, Devolver Digital reacted promptly - with a provocative message: „You can't escape us!“ The statement was taken as a humorous challenge, as Devolver is now also planning to postpone its game to the same day. A bold but likeable move that has been well received by the community. The studio already enjoys a good reputation for creative games and a close relationship with its fans. Speculation is already doing the rounds - is a new Hotline Miami imminent or even a parody of GTA?

Bold marketing move with risk

What seems like a clever marketing stunt nevertheless harbours economic risks. For an independent studio like Devolver, such a radical change of date can be expensive. Nevertheless, the situation is somewhat reminiscent of the simultaneous release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and DOOM Eternal, which led to a charming social media campaign by both fan camps.
