Ecco the Dolphin returns - with a brand new game from the original developer
The legendary underwater game series „Ecco the Dolphin“ is celebrating its comeback - and not just with new editions, but with a completely new title due to be released in 2026.
A new adventure is in development
After years of radio silence, Ed Annunziata, the creator of the original, is working on a fresh instalment of the series. This is neither a remake nor a reboot, but a direct continuation of the classic concept - modernised for today's platforms.
A countdown on the official Ecco website is running towards 26 April 2026. Although there is no official confirmation yet, there are many indications that a major announcement or even the release is planned for this date.
A modern Ecco experience
According to Annunziata, the new game will be a „contemporary Ecco experience“ offer. The aim is to preserve the characteristic atmosphere and exploration-based gameplay of the originals, while adapting the graphics, mechanics and scope to modern standards.
The Ecco games from the 1990s were known for their unique underwater setting and challenging level of difficulty. The new title aims to stay true to this legacy, while being more accessible and technically advanced.
A deep connection with the sea
As in its predecessors, the ocean and its ecosystems take centre stage in the new game. Annunziata emphasises that his Pacific Island origins and personal relationship with the sea strongly influence his work. Ecological themes and the interplay between nature and survival will once again play a central role.
Two remasters also in the works
Parallel to the new game, new editions of the classics Ecco the Dolphin (1992) and Ecco: The Tides of Time (1994) are created. These remasters bring the original gameplay to modern systems - with revised graphics and improved performance, without straying too far from the original.
There are still many unanswered questions: neither the target platforms nor concrete gameplay material have yet been revealed.
