Overwatch gets classic mode like WoW
Blizzard is trying again: After the Classic expansion of World of Warcraft was already a success, Overwatch 2 has now also been given a mode that restores the game to its original state.
With more than 8 million players with an active WoW subscription at the start of the Classic Edition of the game, Blizzard can definitely call it a success. Especially when you consider that things were already much worse for the game and the developer behind it, and that only around half of this figure was achieved at the time of the "Battle for Azeroth" expansion.
Overwatch as it used to be
Overwatch 2 can currently rely on an average of around 23 million players who have logged in in the last month. However, this figure fluctuates. The multiplayer first-person shooter lost almost 2.5 million in the summer - but then recovered in October. It is therefore quite possible that Blizzard is hoping to achieve a similar level of success with the establishment of the Classic Mode for Overwatch 2 as it did with WoW.However, the Classic Modes of the two games are not necessarily comparable. Instead of a stand-alone game, the mode for Overwatch is an event that is initially limited to 3 weeks. The aim is to test whether such a mode is actually popular with players and can achieve the same nostalgic effect that will keep players loyal in the long term.
Contents of the event
In addition to old-school maps such as the Temple of Anubis, Hanamura, King's Row and Dorado, it will again be possible to pick the role of your choice at any time, players will be limited to 6 vs. 6 and some of the now established heroes such as Orisa, Ana, Kiriko or Junker Queen will be removed for the time being. This means that the mode will follow the original Quick Play rules with the 21 original heroes and the first 12 maps (reworked in Overwatch 2 style) and there will initially be no hero or role restrictions, but these will later be supplemented by a single hero limit.
Only standard skins from the original can be used, whereby old features such as loot boxes or the original user interface will be missing.
The event will initially run until 2 December, but only time and feedback from the community will tell whether this could become a long-term, stand-alone game similar to WoW Classic.
