"Splatoon Raiders": All the facts and dishes about Nintendo's new spin-off!
Nintendo fulfils fan wishes - but with restrictions: After years of hope from the community, Splatoon is getting a new release with „Splatoon Raiders“ now actually has its first spin-off.
But watch out: The game will be released exclusively on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo surprised fans with a sudden announcement via the Nintendo Today app and immediately presented a first trailer. The spin-off finally seems to be taking a fresh direction after many fans found the main series too repetitive.
Hardly any concrete information available yet
Concrete details on the release date or gameplay are rare so far. For the time being, fans will have to make do with analyses of the trailer and official promo material to get clues about the gameplay and story.
Innovation at last for the Splatoon series?
Especially after the release of Splatoon 3, fans increasingly criticised the game for offering few new features.
So far, the series has mainly consisted of online battles, a story mode and the co-op-based Salmon Run.
With the latest DLC expansions, especially the roguelike-inspired„Side Order“, Nintendo has already tested new concepts. This content has met with a positive response - some fans even consider it to be the best addition to the franchise.
„Raiders“ could now be the logical next step and realise these innovative ideas in a stand-alone game.
Summery setting with story connection?
The trailer clearly shows a sunny, relaxed island world.
Fans suspect that this choice of theme is not coincidental, but possibly reminiscent of the first Splatfest of Splatoon 3 („Equipment vs. food vs. fun“) ties in.
The victory of„Equipment“ could now have a direct influence on the action of„Raiders“ have.
According to Nintendo, players explore the mysterious Spiralit Islands as a talented mechanic together with the Surimi Syndicate.
The names of the islands and locations are a source of speculation, as they refer to salt, whirlpools and tides - clear indications of a deeper lore.
The new protagonist has a mysterious past, carries a special ink tank and is accompanied by a robot.
A ship-like vehicle apparently serves as a base for the adventures.
Surimi Syndicate is finally given a central narrative role, after they were mostly just supporting characters in previous games.
Fans are now hoping for deeper insights into their history and personality.
Speculation on the genre - survival or open world?
So far there is no official genre confirmation, but the title „Raiders“ could indicate team missions, loot collecting or even survival elements. The equipment and the setting fit well with a kind of survival adventure.
Salmonids as new main opponents?
Trailer clues such as salt and pepper shakers and the colours orange and turquoise, which correspond exactly to the Salmon Run colours, fuel rumours of a more significant role for the salmonids.
Nintendo has been hinting at an important function for the Salmonids for years, which is why they could now possibly appear as rivals or even sympathetic inhabitants of the islands.
Conclusion
A breath of fresh air for Splatoon„Splatoon Raiders“ could be just the fresh, creative change that fans have been waiting for.
The spin-off not only promises exciting adventures and new gameplay, but could also break new ground narratively and take the franchise out of its familiar waters for good.
