The God of War spin-off probably won't arrive until 2026 - insiders report a delay
The reportedly planned God of War spin-off appears to be taking longer to arrive than expected. According to well-connected journalist Jeff Grubb, the game’s release has been pushed back to 2026 – internal reasons are said to be behind the delay.
A new perspective on the God of War universe
Rumors about a spin-off to the successful God of War series have been circulating for quite some time. Unlike the main series, the spin-off is expected to break new ground both stylistically and in gameplay: word is, it will be a 2.5D Metroidvania set in Greece, offering an alternative perspective on the franchise. This aims to usher in a new era within the series – much like Blizzard’s major Diablo Immortal update.
One particularly interesting aspect involves the protagonist: Grubb hinted that a “young Kratos” could take center stage – though it’s unclear whether he actually meant Kratos himself or his son Atreus. Later reports even mentioned the name Deimos, Kratos’ brother, fueling further speculation.
Reason for the delay: Voice acting and strikes?
According to Grubb, the development of the spin-off has been internally delayed – not because the project is too ambitious or because players fear it might require a fully decked-out gaming PC to run – but possibly due to issues with voice acting. Within the gaming community, there is speculation that the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike may have impacted the project. The strike affected numerous major studios, including Disney, Activision, EA, Epic Games, and Take-Two (with subsidiaries like Rockstar, Zynga, and 2K).
Fan reactions: Surprise, but also understanding
The delay comes as a surprise to many fans – not necessarily because they expected a release soon, but because the rumors have so far lacked concrete details. In general, many players are open to the idea of a spin-off, especially the 2.5D concept, which has been well received. Opinions on the main character, however, are divided: while some view Atreus as the logical choice after God of War: Ragnarök, others are hoping for fresh storylines outside the familiar faces.
Some fans also question the credibility of the current leaks – despite Grubb’s well-established reputation in the gaming scene. Without official confirmation from Sony, the project remains speculative.
