Ubisoft comments on takeover rumours

Ubsifort-Ubernahme

Ubisoft has not had an easy time in recent months.
The company has suffered a series of mishaps, from the disastrous flop of Star Wars Outlaws to the delay of Assassin's Creed Shadows and the poor performance of XDefiant.

Ubisoft's share price has also fallen by a remarkable 60 % in the past twelve months. It is therefore not surprising that there are now rumours of a potential takeover.

Bloomberg recently reported that Tencent, one of the world's largest internet technology companies, discussed potential solutions to stabilise the company with the founders of Ubisoft, the Guillemot family. Tencent, already owns 10% of the shares in Ubisoft. A takeover certainly seems possible.

According to Bloomberg, Ubisoft's share price rose by 40% compared to the previous week, prompting the company to publicly address the rumours. A Ubisoft spokesperson confirmed in a statement to VGC that they are indeed looking at all possible options:

Ubisoft has taken note of recent press reports about potential interests in the company.

It regularly considers all strategic options in the interests of stakeholders and will inform the market when and if appropriate."

The company confirms that the management is currently focussing on the implementation of a strategy focused on two core areas: open-world adventures and "GaaS".

Such a vague and meaningless answer was of course to be expected, but it is interesting that Ubisoft is not ruling out the possibility of Tencent taking them over. Whether and what the next big steps for Ubisoft will actually look like, however, remains to be seen.
